2024 Inkwell N | E | W Impossible Germany Riesling
The 2024 N l E l W Riesling marks the final chapter in our work with the legendary Stonegarden Vineyard—a site planted in 1868 and believed to be the oldest surviving Riesling vineyard in the world. Situated at 400m elevation in Eden Valley, Stonegarden rests on ancient granite and schist soils, producing fruit with rare vitality, structure, and a clear sense of place.
With the vineyard now sold and no longer accessible, this release is more than just a wine—it’s a quiet farewell to one of Australia’s most remarkable vineyards.
Made in Inkwell’s signature low-intervention style, this dry Riesling was hand-picked at the point where freshness meets flavour, basket pressed for gentle extraction, and wild fermented in small-format vessels that stay naturally cool, avoiding the need for active chilling—a small but conscious choice that reflects our sustainability ethos. A few hours on skins added depth and a fine phenolic line, enhancing both texture and savoury tension.
The 2024 vintage shows remarkable clarity and balance, driven by fresh natural acidity and a whisper of perceived fruit sweetness that brings roundness and approachability. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with minimal sulphur, it offers a pure varietal expression—elegant, mineral, and quietly powerful.
The previous vintage from this site received high praise from Halliday Wine Companion, celebrated for its textural depth, freshness, and savoury detail. We believe this final release carries that same spirit—perhaps with even greater clarity and intent.
Fresh. Delicate. Honest. This is a Riesling we’re proud to share—and one we won’t be able to make again.
